Sound Insulation Testing2025-07-22T13:38:36+00:00

AiroTech can provide UKAS accredited sound testing and sound insulation testing to comply with the Scottish Building Technical Standards(2019) section 5.

Sound insulation testing should be carried out on new build constructions or conversations where there is ‘different occupation’ in relation to two adjoining buildings or parts of one building, means occupation of those buildings by different persons.

Airborne sound insulation testing is conducted to BS EN ISO 140-4:1998 and Impact sound insulation testing is conducted to BS EN ISO 140-7:1998.

Airborne testing is carried out on separating party walls and floors/ceilings between habitable rooms or flats and buildings of ‘different occupation’

Impact testing is only carried out on separating floors/ceilings between habitable rooms or flats and buildings of ‘different occupation’

Guidance on the number of sound tests to be carried out on new build constructions or conversions is referenced in the Building Technical Standards(2019) section 5, para 5.1.9. table 5.3.

Note:-  such testing is not necessary should ‘Robust Details (Scotland)’ be used in the design of the building or conversion, fully adhering to the scheme rules. Clarification should be sought from your local building control officer before arrangement of the sound test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is sound insulation testing necessary?2025-07-22T13:29:15+00:00

Testing verifies that new or converted buildings meet required airborne and impact performance levels – crucial for regulatory compliance in residential and commercial projects, as mandated by Scottish standards.

When is sound insulation testing required?2025-07-22T13:30:00+00:00

It’s legally required for newly built or converted apartments, flats, student housing, and other multi‑unit dwellings – typically before building completion and occupation.

What kind of sound testing does Airotech provide?2025-07-22T13:28:33+00:00

Airotech delivers UKAS‑accredited sound insulation testing, ensuring compliance with the Scottish Building Technical Standards.

What is sound insulation testing?2025-07-22T13:28:10+00:00

Sound insulation testing is the process of measuring how effectively walls and floors reduce the transmission of sound between adjoining spaces. It assesses two types of noise: airborne sound (such as speech or music) and impact sound (such as footsteps). The results determine whether a building meets the required acoustic performance standards set out in building regulations. This testing is essential for new builds, conversions, and refurbishments, particularly in multi-residential developments such as flats or student housing.

What happens if the building fails the test?2025-07-22T13:30:52+00:00

A detailed report highlights failings, followed by recommendations for soundproofing improvements. After rectification, a retest is scheduled.

How should the building be prepared for testing?2025-07-22T13:31:15+00:00

Doors and windows should be closed; ventilation systems turned off; the building should be dry and at a stable temperature. Airotech will provide a checklist prior to the test.

How is the testing performed?2025-07-22T13:30:25+00:00

For airborne tests, a loudspeaker generates sound in one room while measurements are taken in the adjacent space.

For impact tests, a tapping machine on the floor produces sound which is measured below.

Does sound insulation testing impact residents?2025-07-22T13:33:16+00:00

Tests are non‑invasive; however, occupants may hear test tones or tapping for short periods of time.
